About medical examinations
Why do children need to see a doctor?
Sometimes a child may need to see a doctor. This is to:
- find out if the child is well or needs any treatment; and
- look at any injuries the child may have. This will help the social worker and police officer decide what should happen next.
Who will examine the child?
Medical examinations may be carried out by:
- a family doctor;
- a children's doctor; or
- doctors with a special knowledge of protecting children.
Does a child have to have a medical examination?
The workers will want to ask the person looking after the child to agree for him/her to have a medical examination. Depending on the child's age and how well they understand, we will usually ask the child or young person to agree to any interview or medical examination.
Who will be with the child ?
The child will be asked by the social worker or police officer, who they would like to be with them. It could be:
- the person looking after the child;
- the social worker or police officer; or
- someone who knows the child well.
