Child Protection in Angus
HMIe SFCU Inspection
Scottish Ministers requested that Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) lead the joint inspection of services for children beginning with child protection. The Services for Children Unit (SFCU) was set up as part of the Child Protection Reform Programme. It is an inpsection team based within HMIe and consists of a mix of permanent and seconded staff from other Inspectorates including the Social Work Inspection Agency, the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary as well as HMIE inspectors. It was created to inspect services for children and started with services to protect children.
The purpose of the team is to evaluate the quality of service to children and young people and how that effects their lives and to report on the effectiveness of services to protect children and identify or areas for improvement. Evaluating the experience of children and young people is at the heart of the inspections and activities undertaken include reading case records and speaking with as many children and families as are willing to participate.
The published quality indicators "How well are children and young people protected and their needs met?" have now been distributed to staff in services and agencies involved in the inspection and provide a basis for self-evaluation.
Services for Children inspections commenced in Spring 2006. A copy of the Report of the Joint Inspection of Services to Protect Children in the Angus Area in February 2007 can be found below.
In June 2008 Chief Officers for the key agencies in Angus received notification that a follow through inspection will take place during the week of 20 October 2008. The newsletter below provides full details of the arrangements.
